Advice: Fun Things To Write About

By Cecelia Davis, Kid Editor-in-Chief, age 11

I know it can get pretty boring in your house with nothing to do, but I have
an idea. Have you ever written a story before? My favorite thing to do is
write stories, because you can draw pictures with them and go back and
read them later. I have a book with prompts that I use to write stories, but
here are a few funny, regular, and adventurous writing prompts you can
use yourself. They’re just ideas, so you don’t have to use the exact idea–
maybe you decide that you would rather turn “Going swimming” into “Going
fishing” because you think that would be more fun to write about. These
prompts are written as if the story would be happening to you, but if you
want to make the main character your favorite book character, your best
friend, or a character you made up, that’s fine too!
● You’re going swimming in your pool with two of your friends, when
suddenly the sky starts to turn pink…
● You’ve finally been granted a privilege you’ve wanted for a long time
(a phone, your own room, a later bedtime, a pet, etc.) and then…
● You’re going hiking in the woods with your family when suddenly you
hear a noise in the distance…
● You’re having a sleepover with your friends and one of your friends
decides you should play Truth or Dare…
● One morning, you wake up and discover you have sprouted wings…
● You’re packing for vacation when suddenly your best friend calls you
with emergency news…
● One morning, you wake up and discover that your whole house has
turned into ice…
● Your mom decides that your house needs a pet (or another one if you
already have one) and then…

borrow some flour for a cake…

● It’s a snow day, and you’re wrapped in a blanket sipping hot
chocolate in the middle of winter, when suddenly your mom calls you
to go help with chores…

● You’re doing your chores when suddenly your sibling (make one up if
you don’t have one) says, “If you give me a quarter, I’ll do your
chores and mine.” You say…
● You’re strolling outside on a warm summer day when suddenly it
starts to snow like crazy…
● You decide to finally conquer one of your greatest fears (aren’t
scared of anything? Make up something silly like talking dogs or
dancing pencils!) and then…
● You’re doing your homework when suddenly you come upon a
question that is really confusing…
● You’re rereading your favorite book when suddenly you come across
a weird chapter you’ve never read before…
● Your teacher is asking you to take out your math homework when
you suddenly realize you’re staring at a blank page of paper with only
your name and “3+3=6” on it…
● You’re in your room when suddenly a portal to another dimension
opens up in the wall…
● You’re building a detailed snowman with your family when suddenly,
it starts to talk…
● You’re baking a cake when suddenly your mom says, “Big news!
There’s a contest being held at (wherever you want, even somewhere
crazy like the department store) and whoever makes the best cake
gets a million dollars!” You’re a good cook, so you say…
● You’re reading a book for your book report when suddenly, you see
the characters from your book standing right in front of you…
● You’re at the zoo when suddenly your favorite animal (if you want, it
can be a unicorn or a dragon!) starts talking to you…
● You’re playing in your backyard when a lost dog wanders over to you
and barks…
● You’re playing your favorite sport with your best friend (do you hate
sports? Change it to a board game or a play pretend game!) when
suddenly your annoying younger sibling (don’t have one? Make one
up!) decides they want to play too…

● It’s your birthday and you’re inviting your friends over for an epic
party! Then your best friend hands you a gift and you hear noises
coming from inside the box…
● You’ve decided you’re going to do the extra credit assignment your
teacher assigned when…
● You’re doing homework when suddenly, you get distracted by your
cute pet (don’t have one? Make one up!) and then…
● You’re doing a project on (what do you like most, or least, or what
came to mind first? The project can be on that!) and are very excited
when suddenly your teacher announces that you and a kid you don’t
get along with will be partners and work on the assignment
together…
● Your best friend invites you to their house for a playdate. You say,
“Sure, I’ll be there in one second!” Then you say, “Hey, Mom, can I go
to my friend’s house for a playdate?” and she says no…

plane flies across the sky with a banner that has a message written
on it attached to the back of it that says…
● You’re playing in your backyard and having fun when suddenly you
hear a loud thump…
● You don’t understand your math homework, so you put it away and
decide to come back to it later that night. Then you fall asleep until
eight in the morning the next day…
● You roll over in bed and look at your alarm clock. Somehow, there’s
only three minutes before school starts, so you…
● You’re minding your own business when suddenly a fairy flies up to
you and decides to grant you three wishes…
● You’re in your pajamas, relaxing on the weekend, when suddenly
your mom says, “What are you doing? It’s Thursday and time for
school!” and then…

● You’re at the water fountain at school, getting a drink, when suddenly,
it sprays water all over you and drenches you and your clothes…
● You go into the art room to grab a paintbrush to use for your project.
You get the paintbrush, and then you exit the art room. But the school
doesn’t look like the regular, friendly building you’re used to. Instead,
trees in creepy shapes are all over the place, and the space is dark…
● You’re snacking on your favorite snack when suddenly, you hear an
ear-splitting and high-pitched noise…

These are all of the writing prompts I have. However, use your own ideas to
write your own stories. There are so many ideas in this world, some of
which haven’t even been thought of yet and are just waiting to be thought
of by YOU.
