Since we are quarantined, people might think that we’re not able to get out and help keep our environment clean. But you can go out and help the environment by picking up litter and not littering yourself! I will teach you how to pick up litter. Something fun to do is take a “before” and “after” picture so that you can show people your positive impact on the environment!
First, grab a garbage bag and disposable gloves. If you don’t have boxes of disposable gloves like we did, then you can use old plastic grocery bags by putting your hands into them and tying the handles around your wrist. Some people also have really fancy equipment that they use to pick up litter, but you don’t need that! Put on the gloves and take the garbage bag with you. Then head out the door.
Once you’re outside, you can always start with cleaning your own yard if that’s what you feel comfortable with! If everyone in the world started by cleaning their own yards, the world would be so much cleaner! With your hands (that should be in gloves or grocery bags), pick up the pieces of litter that are visible. Make sure the litter you pick up is safe to touch! If there is something sharp, ask for an adult’s help picking it up.
When all the litter is picked up, then tie the garbage bag so that you can properly dispose of the litter in a large garbage can. There are a few more steps you should take to make sure that your hands are clean! Start by taking off your gloves and throwing them away in a garbage can immediately. After you throw your gloves away, go and wash your hands with soap and water (scrub with soap for twenty seconds!), then dry them.
